What IS the deal with Pythons in Florida

I am not sure why, exactly, this is news, but a python ate a person's cat in Florida. I think we pretty much knew who would win in that battle, so it's not as big a news update as the tie between the 'gator and they python.

But when my friend Missy sent me the link, I actually had to think about it. Why is this news? Don't pythons eat small mammals all the time. Aren't there lots of snakes and assorted lizards that eat small mammals all over Florida. Shouldn't Florida news stations just have a list of animals eaten, the eaters and the locations at the end of each news cast. Doesn't that make more sense than news stories for each time an animal has a snack?
